Comic Relief
It’s no surprise to anyone that I enjoy reading. The Bible is my first choice, but I really appreciate comic books. Super heroes captured my imagination at a young age.
I began collecting comics in sixth grade. In fact, I still collect them. Within my large portfolio existed material from the golden through the modern age (nerd lingo).
Years ago, I mentioned maybe my collection was too large (It was a joke!). Ashley agreed and we decided to downsize. Weeks of cleaning passed, and we finally reached the garage.
I went to organize my comics, but to my horror, the box was empty. All my boxes were empty! “Where are my comics?” I exclaimed. “Oh, I gave them all away,” Ashley replied.
I was horrified, and my anger flared. Gifts, collector’s editions, variant covers…they were all gone. Ashley quickly realized she had misunderstood our conversation and apologized.
I took a deep breath and remembered my sins against the Lord. He had forgiven me, and I was to do the same for others...no matter their transgressions by accident or purpose. “I forgive you,” I responded. We laugh about it today, but I still miss those comics books!
In LOTKS chapter fourteen (Victorious Procession) Helena returned to Kindor. She attended the victory feast, but she can’t enjoy the celebration. Helena went before the king and asked for forgiveness. He decides to forgive her upon remembering his own sins, and Helena becomes the guest of honor.
Helena left home to pursue her dreams, but she finds herself alone and miserable. She returns home to become the guest of honor. The allegory of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) has been placed with her story.
As the king forgave Helena and Jesus forgave us, so are we to forgive others (Matthew 6:14-15). The name Helena means shining light. You can still shine for Jesus despite your past.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
Matthew 6:19-20
