Hobbies are important. Everyone needs time to rest, enjoy themselves and recharge from the stress of life. What’s your favorite hobby? It can be as simple as sitting on the beach (yes!) or as complicated as learning trigonometry (not for me!).
I have a few hobbies, and some of my favorites are collecting geodes and reading. I love amethysts, celestines or anything that sparkles, but there’s one item on my bookshelf that outshines them all.
The Bible is the number one best-selling book in the world. It’s now available through countless means of visual and audio. The Scriptures are inspired by God and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).
The Word of God was given to men by the Holy Spirit. He inspired prophets, kings, apostles, disciples and others to write the Scriptures. Some of these men even wrote during their time in prison and under great stress.
For many years, people have been sentenced to death for owning less than a page of the Bible. It’s currently outlawed in over fifty countries, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone for those who seek it. As Christians we must hide the Word in our hearts, so it will never be snatched away.
In LOTK, Queen Isabella (who represents the Church) is given the Book of the Ancient One by a messenger of light (The Blessing xii). The book represents the Bible, and the messenger is God (or the Ancient One in LOTK), because God gave us His Word. The Book of the Ancient One will be lost, desired, smuggled and stolen, much like the Bible, but what secrets does it hold that could be dangerous?
