Darkside
I consider myself fortunate, because I normally have amazing dreams. I’m flying through space, fighting an epic war or treasure hunting. I hate waking up without the treasure!
My imagination is vivid, but as a child, I struggled with nightmares. I once fell through an old wooden pier into an acid lake. In another, I was chased by a werewolf through a dark, snowy forest teeming with monsters. I also visited a waterpark where the attractions caused horrible injuries! I was stuck in a different horror movie each night!
The nightmares eventually reached their peak in my teenage years. I didn’t even want to close my eyes, but in my darkest hours, I found a secret weapon. I discovered how to call upon Jesus in my sleep.
I immediately awoke upon saying His name. The nightmares soon vanished, and my sleep became restful once again. Very rarely will I have a nightmare these days, but when I do, I know who to call upon—Jesus!
Satan’s goal is to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10) by whatever means possible. He is a dangerous adversary with many weapons in his arsenal. One of which is the ability to attack our thoughts even into our dreams.
In LOTKS Chapter 12 (Spider’s Lair) Helena is led astray by her dreams. She finds herself isolated in a cave. Hadwyn informs her the dreams were a lie from Sahib. A fight soon ensues to free her and others before the barbarian city of Kindor is destroyed.
Satan desires to isolate us from the Church and God. He wants to influence our thoughts so we damage ourselves and others, but we are not defenseless. As Christians we should remember to remain sober-minded (1 Peter 5:8). The temptation we experience through Satan is temporary (James 4:7), but a poor defense can have serious consequences.
“Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” declares the LORD. “They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least,” declares the LORD.”
Jeremiah 23:32
