Nightshade
Ashley and I have met some savory characters throughout our years in ministry. They’ve come in all shapes and sizes, and they all have a story to tell. Nightshade was one of these characters. He enjoyed heavy metal blaring from his car, wore all things black and cloaked his personality with mystery. I thought him to be possibly poisonous or dangerous.
We decided to hold an all-night prayer meeting that was announced to the congregation. It was 1am when a dark figure entered the sanctuary. He wore a black trench coat and a matching mask and top hat. I was certain Nightshade had come to prey on us.
As he approached me, I stood to defend myself. To my surprise, he removed his mask and hat. “Sorry I’m late,” Nightshade said. He kneeled alongside me and began to pray. I was both shocked and relieved.
I later became good friends with Nightshade. Although quiet, he enjoys Christan heavy metal. I had judged him wrongly and perceived him as a threat. Nightshade may be “different,” but he is a follower of Jesus Christ and bears much fruit.
In LOTKS (CH 3 First Strike) Andrius and Caedmon are introduced to Manix and Gunner. The twins are unsure of their loyalties and attempted to fight them, until Kinsey intervenes.
Christians are to judge within and far beyond the Church. (1 Corinthians 6:3-5). Our judgments, through Christ, are essential for the benefit of the world and those around us. We must recognize sin and discern between right and wrong, or we leave judging to the world.
I judged Nightshade by his clothing and music. Sometimes we need to look beyond appearance (John 7:24). Although, as Christians, we should also be sensitive to our environment as ambassadors of Heaven (2 Corinthians 5:20). In some cases, certain attire and music would be appropriate to win some over to Christ (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
